Case Study:
Waimairi Rd, Ilam

Designed by renowned Christchurch architect Peter Beaven and built in 1969, it was important for the owners of this property to retain the original character, but it needed reworking to function as a modern family home.

In the living space, the kitchen has been replaced with a sleek, contemporary fit-out – a crisp, fresh foil that showcases the original timber and brick elements, including cupboards made of wood panelling recycled from the original kitchen/dining area. A 1980s aluminium conservatory was removed, and a courtyard enclosed to form a new dining area.

A new office/garage and entry extension was designed by CoLab Architecture to complement the original structure and, due to the unavailability of the original bricks, columns were given an off-shutter finish for a raw and robust look that sits beautifully alongside cedar elements.

The home was also given a new lightweight roof.
